This course is designed to give graduates career training in an exciting global industry. It is focused on providing the knowledge and skills for career mobility into positions including, travel consulting, working in airline reservations, or tour planning and operating. With a strong practical emphasis, the program includes training in planning, building, marketing and managing a business operating in the Travel & Tourism Industry. A Tourism qualification can lead to work and further study abroad.

All of our courses are delivered by trained, professional staff and lead to nationally-recognised qualifications. Our training is module-based which means that we can offer students a flexible mode of entry often commencing every Monday of the academic calendar. Many tourism graduates use their qualifications in the wholesale and tour guiding industry to administer the daily operations and bookings of tours that extend from rewarding ocean cruises to 4WD trekking and restaurant dining. Course Content Code
Work with Colleagues and Customers: This unit deals with the interpersonal, communication and customer service skills required by all people working in the tourism and hospitality industries. This is a core unit which underpins all other competencies dealing with colleagues and customers and applies to all levels and sectors of the industry. THHCOR01B
Work in a Socially Diverse Environment: This unit deals with the cultural awareness that is required by all people working in the tourism and hospitality industries. It includes the cultural awareness required for serving customers and working with colleagues from diverse backgrounds. THHCOR02B

Follow Health, Safety and Security Procedures: This unit deals with the skills and knowledge required to follow health, safety and security procedures. This unit applies to all individuals working in the tourism and hospitality industries.

Develop and Update Hospitality Industry Knowledge: This unit deals with the skills and knowledge required to access, increase and update knowledge of the hospitality industry including different industry sectors and relevant industry legislation. This knowledge underpins effective performance in all sectors and applies to all people working in the hospitality industry. In-depth knowledge is therefore not required.

Deal with Conflict Situations: This unit deals with the skills and knowledge required to handle difficult interpersonal situations both with customers and colleagues. The unit covers the conflict resolution skills required by all people working in the tourism and hospitality industry to address the conflicts which may arise in day-to-day work activities. It does not include formal negotiation, counseling or conducting mediation. THHGCS03B
Coach Others in Job Skills: This unit deals with the skills and knowledge required to provide on-the-job coaching to colleagues. This unit has no parity with National Workplace Trainer standards, but reflects the situation in many tourism and hospitality workplaces where 'buddy' systems and on job coaching are extremely common. Monitor Work Operations: This unit deals with the skills and knowledge required to oversee and monitor the quality of day-to-day work operations within a tourism or hospitality context. As such it includes the fundamental knowledge of management roles and responsibilities. Team leaders, supervisors or managers would carry out the roles covered in this unit. THHGLE01B

Implement Workplace Health, Safety and Security Procedures: This unit deals with the skills and knowledge required to oversee and monitor the quality of day-to-day work operations within a tourism or hospitality context. As such it includes the fundamental knowledge of management roles and responsibilities. Team leaders, supervisors or managers would carry out the roles covered in this unit.

Lead and Manage People: This unit deals with the skills and knowledge required by managers, supervisors and team leaders to lead and manage teams of people in the workplace, including volunteers where appropriate. The unit focuses on leadership, motivation and teamwork. THHGLE08B

Interpret Financial Information: This unit deals with the skills and knowledge required to interpret the types of financial information used by operational supervisors and managers in their day-to-day work activities. It focuses on understanding of key financial terminology, different types of financial reports and on how financial information is used in the management of a business.

Develop and Implement Operational Plans: This unit deals with the skills and knowledge required to undertake workplace planning. It focuses the skills needed by frontline managers to develop and implement a range of planning initiatives. As such the unit focuses on key planning skills and underpins a range of other leadership units which deal with planning in specific contexts.

Establish and Maintain a Safe and Secure Workplace: This unit deals with the skills and knowledge required to manage health, safety and security issues within a tourism or hospitality context. It focuses on the establishment and monitoring of frameworks, systems and procedures. THHGLE04B
Communicate on the Telephone: This unit deals with the skills and knowledge required to communicate effectively on the telephone. It is an essential skill for large numbers of people working in all sectors of the tourism and hospitality industries. THHGGA01B
Manage Quality Customer Service: This unit deals with the skills and knowledge required to manage customer service quality in the workplace within a tourism or hospitality context. It focuses on the need to develop pro-active approaches to service quality issues with some strategic focus. Managers and some supervisors would generally undertake this role.

Establish and Conduct Business Relationships: This unit deals with the skills and knowledge required to manage business relationships with customers or suppliers within a tourism or hospitality context. It focuses on the relationship building and negotiation skills required by specialised sales and marketing personnel and managers in the industry. This unit therefore covers skills generally not required for operational staff.

Prepare and Monitor Budgets: This unit deals with the skills and knowledge required usually by managers and supervisors to prepare and monitor budgets. While the nature of the budget may vary, the unit focuses on the key managerial skills of analysing financial information to inform the budget development process, drafting a budget and the vital role of monitoring budget performance over time. Develop / Maintain Legal Knowledge for Business: This unit deals with the skills and knowledge required to ensure business compliance with legislation governing the tourism and hospitality industries. It applies to senior personnel and managers. Knowledge of specific legal issues is covered within many other units; therefore there is some overlap with this unit. Repetition should be avoided in training and assessment. THHGLE20B
Manage Finances Within a Budget: This unit deals with the skills and knowledge required to take responsibility for budget management where others may have developed the budget. THHGLE13B
Perform Office Procedure: This unit deals with the skills and knowledge required to complete a range of routine office procedures and activities including writing simple correspondence. It does not cover specific financial skills which are found in other units such as THHGFA01B Process financial transactions. THHGGA02B
Use Business Technology: This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to select, use, and maintain business technology. This technology includes the effective use of computer software to organise information and data. This unit is related to BSBCMN307A Maintain business resources. BSBCMN205A
Produce Simple Word-Processed Documents: This unit covers preparation and production of short routine letters, notes, memos and records using word processing software. This unit is related to BSBCMN107A Operate a personal computer, BSBCMN108A Develop keyboard skills and BSBCMN306A Produce business documents. BSBCMN213A
Manage Projects: This unit deals with the skills and knowledge required to manage major projects within a tourism or hospitality industry environment. Managers and team leaders would generally undertake this role. This unit does not reflect the skills required by operational staff. THHGGA09B

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Students are required to have a good standard of English
  • A desire to succeed in the Tourism industry
  • If English is not your first language, you will need English language proficiency of IELTS (Academic) 5.5 overall, with a minimum of 5.0 in each band OR an equivalent English language proficiency test

 

DELIVERY & ASSESSMENT METHODS

  • Lectures are the principal means by which course material is delivered. Most classes are conducted in an interactive fashion. Students are expected to ask questions and actively contribute to class discussions. A student needs to be an active member of the class rather than a passive member. Students are required to comply with college policy on attendance and academic performance.
  • Students are notified at the start of each module of the its content , assessment methods , time frames & outcomes

 

COURSE OUTCOME

  • On successful completion of the Diploma of Tourism ( Operations Management) the student will be awarded a nationally recognised Diploma by Mackintosh International College.
