Hairdressing is an industry which provides limitless opportunities for career mobility. It is a rewarding career that encourages you to be creative, innovative and a genuine trend setter. Getting a job is not a problem. It is possible to work anywhere in the world: at your local salon? on a cruise ship? or perhaps a movie set? Hairdressing skills can lead to work and further study abroad. Career training in the form of a Certificate III in Hairdressing at Mackintosh College will give you independence and security.

All hairdressing programs at Mackintosh College are delivered by industry professionals and are a combination of theory and practical training. A personal training program is designed with each student on commencement. The course covers all the areas required to effectively operate as a senior stylist and covers the disciplines of salon etiquette, teamwork, workplace health and safety, meeting, greeting, and preparing clients for salon services, shampooing and removing hair colour, confidently communicating with clients, recommending hairdressing products and services and learning to professionally interact in a live salon environment.

The initial months of the course are dedicated to mainly theoretical and practical training in the training salon and theory rooms. During this time students will follow an individual skills development programme to ensure they have all the skills and technical knowledge to progress to out State of the Art commercially operated salon. They also learn about the science of skin and hair, analysing and treating the hair and scalp, consulting with clients to design and perform all hairdressing services including: blow-drying, setting and up-styling; colouring, lightening and colour correction; adding or relaxing curl permanently and performing fundamental and advanced cutting techniques .

Once students can demonstrate sound knowledge and skill in all hairdressing disciplines using mannequins they begin practical training working with salon clients where they will also gain ‘real industry work experience’ as a junior stylist. In this phase, 70% of the course is practical with 30% being theory based. They will regularly perform client services in the Salon under close supervision from salon supervisors.

In the final stage of the qualification students become known as junior stylists and spend much of their time polishing their practical skills ‘on the salon floor'. Junior stylists are mentored by a qualified and experienced stylist or the salon manager and on a daily basis take control of managing their appointments and time. Just like a real salon, when clients are present they take priority. So students should expect that at any time they can be performing salon services for clients. This is where technique is perfected, the arts of communication, consultation and recommending services and home hair care products is refined and superior customer service is attained. The end result will see students confidently master all the techniques and skills required as a qualified hairdresser in Australia.

The new hairdressing kits have been influenced by international trends and techniques. It combines the new with the classic, cutting edge with commercial. This salon professional kit ensures you are equipped to meet all the necessary requirements of the new standards and provide a commercially viable service to clients during and after your course has ended. All students receive this kit as part of their enrolment.
